Will it fit or not?
This was the question on everyone’s mind at Monday’s Mayes County Commissioner meeting. At the last meeting, Commissioner Darrel Yoder said he would visit the Disney Fire Department to measure the bays where fire trucks are parked. The commissioners needed to determine if the department’s new fire engine would fit into an existing bay or if additional space is needed.
“I went over there and measured their doors and their fire truck,” said Yoder. “It did fit in the nine-foot opening. We've been mislead on this deal when they told us it wouldn't fit.
“I've lost my trust for them now that I've been mislead and lied to about the situation. I am not in favor of building new,” said Yoder.
Commissioner Ryan Ball asked if the truck would have enough clearance to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety standards. Ball said he took pictures of the fire truck in the bay and there is only a three- or four-inch space left over.
“They need to get their story straight. They sat right here and he told me he measured and it didn't fit,” said Commissioner Alva Martin.
“I can’t speak to that but I will say that as their commissioner, I'm saying they need one more bay,” said Ball.
Yoder said he believes Disney’s equipment is sufficient for all the work the department does, including covering the Pensacola dam area.
Ball was adamant that the department needed another bay. Yoder said he did not need to discuss it further.
As the size of the Disney fire truck bays was discussed under old business, no action was taken.
The commissioners, accompanied by a handful of attorneys, entered into an executive session to discuss the disbursement of the 2002 one-quarter percent Mayes County Sales Tax.
The discussion behind closed doors involved the sales tax allotted to fire departments.
“I move to extend an invitation to Jason Miller, chairman of the Firefighter Association to meet with us individually to see if we can work something out on this,” said Martin.
This sales tax is the source of recently re-allocated fire funds.
The commissioners approved a lease purchase agreement for equipment for District 2. Deposits into the general fund, claims for payment and blanket purchase orders were approved.
