Salina Chamber of Commerce is thinking outside the box in its efforts to raise money for the 4th of July fireworks display. The chamber is hosting a 5k water run Saturday, June 22.
Since the town promotes Lake Hudson and the firework display will be there, the chamber wanted to include water in the fundraising efforts. A creative chamber member thought up this one-of-a-kind fun run/walk idea. The runners will begin the race at 9 a.m. Following the course around town, like any other 5K. Along the course, however, the Salina Fire Department and other sponsors will set up “ambush stations,” to douse the runner with water. Runners can expect to see water balloons, hoses, squirt guns and sprinklers.
Approximately 50 businesses and individuals have signed up as sponsors, earning a place on the official T-shirts. The first 100 participants registered will receive a free T-shirt, but they are going fast.
The event will be professionally timed with medals for each age group, the most sponsorship, the best team costume and fastest overall team.
The chamber is committed to raising $7,000 for the fireworks and is certain this fundraiser is just the ticket.
There is still time to register to participate in the Water Run; an entry form can be downloaded from the Salina Chamber of Commerce website or picked up at Lakeside Jiffy Stop or PigNOut in Salina.
