Man arrested after carjacking

PRYOR, OK — Authorities are searching for the man who held his driver at gunpoint and shot another passenger.

The incident occurred between Cherokee Heights and Sportsman Acres housing additions, Thursday around 11:30 a.m. The location was on a county easement making it the jurisdiction of the Mayes County Sheriff's Office.

“There was a vehicle traveling from Salina to Cherokee Heights with five passengers,” said Sheriff Mike Reed. “One passenger, a hispanic male, pulled out a handgun and held it to the driver’s head.”

Reed said the armed passenger demanded the driver exit the vehicle. When the driver refused, a fight ensued.

“During the argument the gun went off and a female passenger was shot in the hand,” Reed said.

At that point the passengers all exited the vehicle and the armed man fled the scene.

Reed said a BOLO, be on the lookout, was issued and Mayes County Sheriff’s Office began the search.

Thursday afternoon the vehicle was recovered in Strang where it had been abandoned.

“We’ve processed the vehicle and evidence consistent with the event has been recovered,” said Reed, who is in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant.

Because the investigation is ongoing, Reed did not disclose the names of anyone involved.

Authorities anticipate multiple arrests being made from the incident and the charges, once formally filed, could include larceny and reckless discharge of a firearm.

“This couple was giving a ride to individuals they knew, then the passengers pulled a gun and demanded the vehicle,” said Investigator Jason Treat. “So the victims know the suspects, at this point we are working on obtaining the search warrant.”

Treat said the armed man does have a prior criminal record.
