PRYOR, OK —
Chouteau talked about demolishing an eyesore at the Board of Trustees meeting Monday night.
The trustees discussed declaring a property at 210 W. Main St. a public nuisance.
“I think we ought to declare it a public nuisance and begin the process to demo it. I think our main street is looking 100 percent better than it did a year ago but this building is right across from the bank and it's an eyesore,” said Mayor Jerry Floyd.
The property owner was present at the meeting and asked the board why his property was being considered a public nuisance.
“It doesn't leak or nothing,” the property owner said, explaining he waned to do some work on the property once his financial situation allows. “Everything takes money now-a-days.”
Board member Brenda Cunningham told the property owner it doesn’t cost money to clean the property up.
“I have five kids, the property isn't any worse now than it was two years ago,” the property owner told the board.
“Well, then get your kids to pick up trash,” Cunningham said.
Floyd reiterated he believes the property is an eyesore and needs to be cleaned up.
The owner was asked if he had any concrete plans to clean up the property.
“Yeah, it's been cold. I've just got some credit established so I should be able to work on it by this summer,” he said.
The board told the man standard procedure allows only 30 days to clean up a property.
“My youngest has been quite a handful,” the man added.
“I make a motion to table this for 30 days to give him some time to get things cleaned up before we proceed,” said Floyd, and the motion was approved.
“You understand that's 30 days and we'll need to see some improvements,” Cunningham said.
Also in the name of town beautification, the Chouteau Garden Club approached the board about raising the funds to place benches around town and in the town park.
Nora Courtney, of the Garden Club, said the group is in the planning stages right now but wanted to get permission to place the benches before they proceeded with fundraising.
“They will be eye-catching but simple. And they will be either bolted down or weighted so they can't be damaged or blown away,” said Courtney.
With no questions or concerns the board approved her request.
