Changes in store for Relay

April 28, 2012 Sommer Reider

A couple changes are in store for county Relayers this year with a new date, updated survivor ceremony and live entertainment.

The Relay committee decided to move the date to the first Friday in May instead of its previous weekend in June. The hope is the weather will be cooler for Relay participants, especially survivors.

Another exciting element of the Relay this year is Red Dirt Rangers will perform directly after the survivor ceremony, which kicks off the Relay at 6 p.m.

Red Dirt Rangers formed in Stillwater, the epicenter of Red Dirt music. They are sure to delight the fans at this year’s Relay.

Other local musical groups who will perform that night are The Law Dawgs and Praiz 101.

Relay participants will also be treated to a new and updated survivor/caregiver ceremony. A Relay Hero of Hope, Ronnie Trentham, will speak before helping in the survivor ceremony.

In the past, survivors had their names and diagnoses read aloud during the ceremony and were given a token from the committee. This year, survivors and caregivers will be recognized in a ceremony that even includes the participants.

“I first witnessed this type of ceremony at Leadership training in Dallas and it took my breath away,” said Sommer Reider, committee member. “I couldn’t wait to share it with the committee and see if they wanted to bring it here. It is truly a touching and inspirational ceremony.”

As always, the public is encouraged to attend the Relay Friday, May 4, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., for an evening to celebrate, while they enjoy good food and have lots of fun.
