CN makes employment opportunities accessible

April 24, 2012 The Times

The Cherokee Nation is helping its citizens find work by sponsoring job fairs in communities across northeastern Oklahoma.

The tribe recently sponsored job fairs in Locust Grove, Salina, Claremore, Verdigris, Pryor, West Siloam Springs, and Tahlequah to fill entry-level positions at its casinos. Additional job fairs are scheduled for May at the Cherokee Casino in West Siloam Springs and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Catoosa.

Organizers said there can be barriers to finding work, especially for those in rural communities, and an objective of the job fairs is to make employment opportunities available to Cherokee citizens throughout the tribe’s jurisdiction.

“We’re doing the job fairs at the community level rather than online because not everyone has access to be online to apply. Also, at the community level, a lot of times transportation is a factor,” said Rob Daugherty, Cherokee Nation Tribal Employment Rights Office job and business developer. “Our goal is to provide opportunity for employment for those who are seeking jobs. Hopefully we can provide people who are ready for the workforce with an interview.”

Job fair attendees have a chance to see what casino positions are open, meet potential employers and exhibit their job skills. The recruitment events are getting results, helping Cherokee citizens find work.

“We want everyone to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there. We’re trying to get employment opportunities to all of those in the community,” said Jan Grogan, Cherokee Nation Career Services college and career resource specialist. “Out of 117 Cherokees who completed job applications, more than 30 percent were hired to fill open positions. This percentage will more than likely increase when all the applicants have been contacted. There were more vacant jobs posted after the West Siloam Springs job fair, so there are more jobs to be had.”

Additional job fairs will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at the Cherokee Casino in West Siloam Springs and Tuesday, May 29, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Catoosa. Prospective employees should bring a resume and come prepared for an interview. For more information call 918-453-5555 or email careerservices@cherokee.org.
