New LG officer handles crime like a pro

PRYOR, OK — Officer John Stanglin has been with the Locust Grove Police Department for two months, but handled an unusual drug arrest like an old pro.

“Sunday night around 9 p.m., the department received a call about a male and female at a residence. Shortly after, officers received a second call saying a male subject had broken into the residence and had assaulted the homeowner,” said Police Chief Chris Edwards. Stanglin was the officer dispatched to the scene.

“The call was made alerting us to a male and female subject who had possibly overdosed on K2,” said Stanglin, saying police officers were dispatched to Harrison Street in Locust Grove.

“On scene, the female subject was acting very strange, Stranglin said. “She kept asking if I believe in God and telling me she was a demon.”

The male subject, identified as David Ayers, 19, fled the residence out the back door, according to Stanglin.

“He broke into a nearby residence and assaulted the homeowners,” Stanglin said, adding he was able to get Ayers into handcuffs in that residence.

Ayers had synthetic marijuana in his possession, according to Stanglin, and was taken to the hospital before being booked into Mayes County Jail.

“We are anticipating charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, first-degree burglary, assault and battery, public intoxication and resisting arrest,” said Stanglin, who said this was not his first run-in with abusers of K2. “But this is the first time I’ve seen someone have hallucinations like he was. While he was coming down at the hospital, he had no idea what was going on.”

Stanglin said he hopes the community comes to realize how dangerous K2, a synthetic form of marijuana, can be.

“Thanks to Officer Stanglin’s quick response and great actions, Ayers was whisked away to jail before any more people could be affected by Ayers’ actions,” said Edwards, describing Stanglin as dedicated and proactive.
