Adair Community for Excellence in Education Foundation fundraiser

ADAIR — The first annual Adair Community for Excellence in Education Foundation dinner is 7 p.m., March 29, at the Bernita Hughes Cafeteria. The first grant recipients and Adair Schools Teacher of the Year will be recognized.

The featured speaker is retired Lt. Gen. Harley Hughes, a 1953 graduate of Adair High School. He was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in the Air Force upon graduation from Okla-homa State University in 1957. After pilot training, he was assigned to fly B-52 Bombers and was an aircraft commander during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was one of the two youngest aircraft commanders in Strategic Air Command, where he served for five years. He was assigned to the University of Colorado, where he received a master’s degree in Manpower Management in 1967. Upon completion of F-4 training, he was assigned to Cam Rahn Bay and flew 238 combat missions, 38 over North Vietnam. During this time, Hughes was awarded the Silver Star and four Distinguished Flying Crosses for valor.

After Vietnam he was assigned to the Pentagon as a force structure planner. He was subsequently assigned to the National War College and graduated in 1974. He went back to SAC and served as the youngest Deputy Commander for Operations in the command while at Kincheloe Air Force Base, Michigan. He was then assigned to the Pentagon and promoted.

After reitring from the Air Force in 1988, he became the Senior Vice-President of BETAC and along with his wife, Judge Grace Flores-Hughes, established their own consulting buisness, working for several large international corporations.

Hughes is President and CEO of Immediate Response Technologies which manufactures lightweight, life saving and protection equipment for the U.S. Military. The equipment includes powered air respirators, filter canisters for military, mortuaries, decontamination shelters and transportable high technology kitches.

Tickets for the dinner are $15 for an individual, $25 per couple, $200 per table sponsor (8) or $20 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at Adair Bank of Commerce or the AHS Administration  offices.
