Storm causes scattered outages

Monday’s storm caused scattered but minimal problems throughout the county.

Pryor received approximately three inches of rain according to Johnny Janzen, director of Mayes County Emergency Management.

Janzen said 49th Street had to be closed around 7:30 p.m. because the road began to flood.

“Elliott got close, but the water started going down,” Janzen said.

Janzen said “right around three inches” of hard rain is when Pryor starts having water issues.

“It came down pretty quick,” Janzen said. “Luckily it quit.”

Janzen said three or four homes were struck by lightning in Pryor, Langley and Strang.

Strang Fire Chief Travis Fleming said lightning was the probable cause of a structure fire on East 450 Road, just west of North 440.

Fleming said the call came shortly before 6 p.m. Fleming was first on scene and the fire had fully engulfed the structure. Fleming said the flames had broken through the roof when he arrived.

Fleming said no one was living in the home, which was why the blaze went undetected at first.

Later in the evening, the storm brought winds blowing 70 miles per hour. Janzen said the winds caused most of the damage, including downed power lines. A barn north of Adair lost a roof. In some places, large trees were blown down over the road.

Power outages occurred in Pryor, Adair and Strang, but the power was quickly restored.
