Commissioners to recognize deputies for service

Julie Yates
Staff Reporter

Mayes County Sheriff Frank Cantey asked the Board of County Commissioners Monday to recognize five reserve deputies.

Mayes County deputies Jerry Douglas, Jason Treat, Clifford Smallwood, Cevin Smallwood and Eddy Bob Mathews helped patrol in Seminole County following the shooting death of two Seminole County deputies.

Cantey said Seminole County requested help with patrol from other counties. The five Mayes County reserves worked Seminole County the week of the funeral for the fallen deputies.

The Seminole deputies were killed Sunday, July 26, while serving an arrest warrant.

Cantey said motel expenses were covered for his five reserves, who assisted Seminole County on their own time. Cantey said when the deputies stopped for lunch at Seminole County restaurants, they received free meals.

Mathews, pastor at Pleasant Hope Baptist Church in Adair, was available as a chaplain during his stay in Seminole County.

Commissioners agreed to sign a resolution expressing appreciation to the deputies for their service. The proclamation will be made during next week’s commissioner meeting.

• District 3 is selling a truck to Adair County District 3. Commissioner Melvin Pritchett said he surplused a 1993 Ford truck and distributor, selling it to Adair County for $10,000.

• Cantey was elected as first vice president of the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Association during the annual August conference. He will move to the president’s seat in August 2010.

• Commissioners approved Salina Schools to apply for a Rural Economic Action Plan Grant through Grand Gateway. The grant will fund a sport court for the new Salina Elementary School.

• District 3 received $2,500 from the Mayes County Court Clerk’s office for a right-of-way easement purchased in 2003.
