Members of the Locust Grove Area Chamber of Commerce met Wednesday at Ruby’s Readery to discuss a variety of topics including putting the final touches on the Chamber banquet, setting up committees and voting for the Citizen of the Year.

The Chamber banquet is set for 6 p.m., Friday, July 18, at Country Cottage. The Chamber officers will be sworn in and special guests will speak. President Leslie Mack said she has confirmation from Senator Mary Easley and Judge James Goodpaster.

The chamber will also recognize the new Citizen of the Year, Betty Perkins, at the banquet. A vote of members who attended the July meeting resulted in Perkins winning the honor.

The next topic for discussion was the upcoming Fall Festival scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11. The annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook-off will be held either at the Upper Elementary or the football field. The pumpkin carving contest will also return with Sonic providing prizes.

The festival is held the same day at the annual Special Partners In Children’s Education fund raiser as a way to bring more people into town for both events. This year’s SPICE theme is movies.

In other chamber business:

• The group agreed to looking into the cost of hiring someone to build and maintain a Web site.

• Having fund raisers was also discussed as a way of paying for the Web site and any other outside work.

Committee chairpersons were established for the Chamber’s yearly events. This year’s Fall Festival Chairman is Wade Bennett. Bennett is also the Chairman of the Founder’s Day committee. Mack will head the Christmas Parade committee and Sandy Burford will lead the newly formed beautification committee.

• There was discussion of a membership drive and maybe a membership drive committee.

• The annual Christmas parade will be Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. The group plans to talk to the fire department about having Santa visit after the parade for the kids to take pictures with him.

• Ideas were brought up on hosting a war re-enactment at Pipe Springs.

• The group talked about ways of bringing in new businesses.
