Selling liquor on Sundays?

Julie Yates
Staff Reporter

Mayes County business owners asked for the sale of alcohol on Sunday to be put on the ballot this year. Commissioners heard from Langley and Disney restaurant owners Monday.

Ernest Sessler of Las Lagos Restaurant in Langley pointed out the sale of alcohol on Sunday will bring revenue for the town, county and state. Sessler said he would possibly extend his business hours if allowed to sell liquor on Sundays.

Richard Carriger with Pensacola Pizza & Pasta in Langley said it seems unreasonable that his business is not allowed to sell liquor when customers can go across the Delaware County line and buy it. People representing Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill in Disney said they lose a lot of lake business. Sunday boaters and fishermen go to Delaware County to buy their alcohol.

Commissioners Alva Martin and Melvin Pritchett feel the choice should be offered to voters. Commissioner Larry Ramsey said he’d like to hear what business owners in Pryor think about the sale of alcohol on Sunday. Commissioners will discuss the issue further in upcoming meetings.

Mayes County Emergency Management Services will be providing emergency management for the town of Chouteau. Chouteau Mayor Jerry Floyd said Mike Orange, Chouteau’s Emergency Management Director “just up and left us.” Floyd said he has attempted to contact Orange to find out why he left, but has been unsuccessful in contacting him. Chouteau is working with Mayes County Emergency Management to provide emergency services. Floyd estimates the cost will be approximately $4,000, which he said the budget will support.

MESTA Director Rick Langkamp said the 911 building in the industrial park is being constructed. The facility will feature a tornado shelter for all Mayes County employees in the area.
