Adair student returns from energy camp

Courtnye Neice, Adair, recently returned from the 2009 Rural Electric “YouthPower Energy Camp,” where she served as a delegate from Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Neice, the daughter of Ralph and Ella Neice was among 85 outstanding eighth graders chosen from across the state to represent their local rural electric cooperative during the four days at Canyon Camp, just east of Hinton.

“In my opinion, the most exciting part of the trip was the dance on the last night because our counselors made it a special place for us,” said Neice.

“Other highlights of the trip were the ropes course where we were the first camp to use it and of course cabin number six with Stacy, Paula and Barbara and all the fun,” said Neice.

While at the camp, the delegates attended sessions on energy, electrical safety and rural electric careers. They elected their own manager and board of directors and operated a Coke and Candy Cooperative. Other special activities of the four-day program included hands-on electrical demonstrations, such as pole-climbing and bucket truck rides from linemen, a 13 low-element ropes course, swimming, an energy battle tournament and a trip to Celebration Station for video games and go-carts.

The “YouthPower Energy Camp” is coordinated by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives and Northeast Electric Cooperative in Vinita.
