Horticulture students at SkillsUSA

Horticulture students from Pryor Northeast Technology Center (NTC) recently won top awards at the state SkillsUSA Competition. This contest was May 3-5 in Tulsa.

In the Job Readiness Floral Design category, NTC students swept the top awards. Rebecca Tillock of Foyil placed first in the Secondary (high school) division. Ashlee Moore of Pryor also placed first in Post-Secondary division. In Job Readiness Floral design, students learned thirty cut flowers and potted plants and demonstrated making a fresh flower centerpiece.

NTC students also won high awards in the Floral Design category. In this advanced-floral division, Teria McClelland of Pryor placed 2nd and Eddie Morales of Pryor placed 3rd. Brittany Woody of Claremore also ranked 4th in the state. For the advanced Floral Design division, students learned 200 cut flowers and potted plants. They planted three arrangements: a party design, flowers to wear, and a mystery design. Finally, they showed how to set up a display using the three arrangements.

Carol Norton of Pryor placed 2nd in the Post-Secondary Job Demonstration category. In this division, students were required to choose an area that they were being trained in and give a demonstration. Carol gave a presentation over the use of herbs and demonstrated how to plant a hanging basket.

All six state winners are currently Horticulture students at Pryor NTC. Their instructor, Sharon Key, helped them prepare for the contest.
