Salina looking for librarian
Sommer Woodward
Staff Reporter
The Salina Public Library will be looking for a new librarian since director Tracy Nilsen is leaving this summer.
Nilsen submitted a letter of resignation explaining her husband’s job is moving to Pittsburg, Penn., so she will be moving no later than July 30.
Nilsen wanted to stay through the summer reading program and long enough to train her replacement.
The board accepted her resignation during the monthly meeting Tuesday and voted to seek another library director to replace Nilsen when she leaves.
A bank account used for donations and grants to the library was turned over to the Friends of the Library.
Friends of the Library received their 501c3 non-profit status. Trustees decided instead of having them open a new bank account, the town’s account containing grant money for the library would be turned over to the Friends of the Library.
In the future, any donations for the library the town receives will go into the general fund and be disbursed from there.
In an effort to cut back on late fees at the library, the board voted to install an outdoor book drop in the parking lot. The cost is $550. The town’s portion is $225 and Friends of the Library will pay for the remainder.
The board approved a mobile home variance for Clifford Gann at 406 W. Frontier. Gann asked permission to put a new double wide on the property. He will be required to follow city codes when placing the double wide on the property.
The board voted to allow S&S House Movers to place a house on the vacant lot on the corner of South Owen Walters Blvd. and East Pilgrim Street. S&S House Movers is allowed to keep the home there for up to six months while they attempt to sell the building.
Ordinance 2008-2 was approved, modifying the mobile home and
manufactured building ordinance in the Town of Salina. Previously, the town had ordinances regulating mobile homes inside the town, but not in mobile home parks.
Requirements are the mobile home be properly skirted, have proper tie downs installed, shall not be attached to another mobile home unless designed to do so, have axles and tongues removed or properly skirted within 45 days of placement and be properly titled and documented.
The ordinance requires all mobile homes inside town limits to come into compliance with the code within 45 days after publication of the ordinance.
The board re-addressed the agreement with Rowdy Malchow to house and euthanize animals picked up within town limits. The town will pay $50 to have Malchow keep and euthanize the animal. If the animal isn’t euthanized, the town will pay $10 per day for three days.
The board clarified the sick leave policy for town employees. After one year, employees are given five days sick leave and accumulate one day per year of employment up to 11 days.
In other business:
• The board approved repairing a tractor for $2,000.
• The storm siren hasn’t been tested Wednesday at noon since Carrie Quinn retired from the police department. The board decided the siren will be tested by town office employees in the future.
• The board discussed the accumulation of signs at intersections. Gaddis will look into an ordinance banning signs at intersections which would give the town the authority to address the problem when intersections are inundated with real estate and garage sale signs.
