Burdick to retire after 40 years

PRYOR - In the spring of 1968, the Pryor School Board had general business to take care of - the resignations of Margaret Hood and Lawrence Peerson, approving

student transfers - but the big business was naming Dr. Larry G. Burdick superintendent.

In the next 40 years, Burdick would become a staple of Pryor schools and a model superintendent for others throughout the state.

Several new buildings were built during Burdick’s tenure, including the beautiful activity center that is adorned with his name. It has proved to be one of the best facilities of its kind in Oklahoma.

Burdick says he is proud of the buildings that have been built during his time in Pryor. He is also proud of watching the students grow up and go on to do special things.

He picked this year to retire because “it just seemed like the right time.” He said he made the decision a few years back, and has stuck to it.

He believes that Pryor schools is a great school system, and will continue to develop after he leaves because of the community and staff at the schools.

Donald R. Raleigh Jr. will take over next year, and Burdick said he will step aside and let Raleigh take control of the school system. He said he will still have a “great interest” in Pryor schools.

“This is our home,” said Burdick.
