Strang council member and mayor have altercation

Julie Yates
Staff Reporter

A newly elected Strang council member was arrested Wednesday for allegedly hitting the mayor with his van.

Jerry Boyd Gregory, 46, was booked into Mayes County Jail for assault and battery.

The court affidavit states that Gregory and Strang Mayor Bill McClellan had an altercation in the post office parking lot April 9. Gregory allegedly struck McClellan with his van “willfully and intentionally.”

The statement says McClellan was uninjured except for being sore. McClellan stated if he had not grabbed Gregory’s mirror to keep from falling, Gregory would have run over both his legs.

Strang City Clerk Vicki Herbeck said Gregory was elected as a Strang councilman April 7, two days before the altercation. The council seat swearing in is scheduled for April 20. Herbeck said she is unsure how the incident will affect Gregory’s position.

Gregory is being held at Mayes County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
