Adair Chamber of Commerce has banner year

Adair Chamber of Commerce has a checking account balance of $5,522.39. “We’ve never ended a year with that much money,” Treasurer Diana Kennedy said.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Bette Schneider gave a recap of the Chamber’s year. In 2007, Adair Chamber of Commerce had 68 members. That was an increase of 18 from 2006.

A total of $6,100 was donated to the baseball/softball complex, $1,100 of which was made by members working at Country Fever. The Chamber spent $680 for flower barrels downtown. The Easter Egg Hunt at the football field had 1,600 plastic eggs, many containing money.

The Chamber donated $100 to project graduation, $100 to the prom fund and gave a $500 scholarship.

The fundraiser golf tournament brought in $1,792. Rental on the Rudd Center made $1,135 profit for the Chamber.

Chamber members worked at Rocklahoma, earning $1,000. Adair’s Christmas in the Country made $1,186.

The Chamber donated $150 for Thanksgiving food baskets given to needy Adair families, $350 for youth Christmas gifts and $100 for prizes in the town’s Christmas lighting contest.

Marilyn Littlefield was named Citizen of the Year and honored at the annual banquet.

Adair School Superintendent Tom Linihan introduced students of the month for both December and January. December’s students were Maddelyn Fraley and Jared Deckard.

Fraley is an athlete competing in basketball, softball and track. She has set seven school records in softball. She is a member of FCCLA, FCA, science and art clubs. She plans to begin her college education at Northeast Oklahoma A&M then move on to a major university.

Deckard is active in FCA and builds robots. He is a computer technicnian who Linihan said “keeps the school’s computer system running.” He plans to

continue his education

at Northeastern State University.

January’s students of the month are Summer Bingham and Jeff Yates. Bingham plays the trumpet and is a member of both the small school and big school all-state bands. She is a member of the color guard, choir, FCA and student council. She attended Girl’s State last year. She plans to attend the University of Tulsa.

Jeff Yates is a member of Adair band, choir and FCA. He played football and is a weight lifter. Although undecided about his further education, Yates said it will involve music.

Linihan said school was getting back to normal after Christmas break with three and a half days in session. Two days were missed because of the ice storm, but Linihan said with three school days and two professional days built into the calendar, the schedule can remain the same if there is no more severe weather.

Chamber President Randy Ross introduced the Business of the Month, The Corner Store, owned by Patty Eby.

Rose Moore said the Christmas lights contest was the largest so far.

“Over $2,000 in cash and prizes was promised,” Moore said. “ Not all of that was collected. There were a few fudge eaters, but we had nice prizes.” First, second and third prizes are given both residential and commercial categories. The residential winners were Diane and Jimmy Taylor whose home is located in Lakeside North. The commercial winner was Petticoat Junction real estate office.

Moore said some of the yearly contributors are willing to contribute money for lighted town decorations. “We want to get this Christmas Community on the map,” Moore said. She said Northeast Oklahoma Rural Electric Cooperative and Country Fever have been the biggest contributors to the lighting contest.
