Lumber yard turns three

PRYOR, OK — Affectionately known around town as “The Lumber Yard,” Builders Wholesale and Hardware Supply is celebrating their third year in business on Main Street in Locust Grove.

The store is owned by two couples who met by chance and are now building a future together.

Owners Marsha and Clayton Evans and Burll and Sissy Ellis met several years ago when Burll, who worked construction, did some work for the Evanses.

“We became friends when Burll and his team resurrected my grandparents’ cabin on Spring Creek,” Marsha Evans said.

The couple bonded with Ellis and soon his wife, Sissy, joined the mix and the couples have been friends ever since.

“When the building became available, we all decided to go in together,” Evans said.

They decided to put in a hardware and building supply because the town needed it and “Burll had knowledge and experience in that area.”

Marsha came out of retirement (from Conoco Phillips) and she joined Burll who manages the business. Both are on hand to run the day to day operations. Both of their spouses kept their day jobs.

Clayton is a petroleum engineer and works Monday through Thursday in Tulsa. Sissy works as manager of the Dollar General in Peggs.

“She’s the only one of all of us with sales experience and she’s not here,” Evans said with a grin.

The decision to go into business together was shocking to their mutual friends, Evans said.

“All of our friends, when they found out, they said ‘What?!’,” she said.

Now three years into it, the group is going strong, constructing memories and building a future on a foundation of friendship.
