RSU communication students win Oklahoma awards

Five RSU Communications Students to be Honored with Statewide Awards

Garrett Powders of Tulsa, Josh Gammon of Broken Arrow, David Prock of Collinsville, Emily Mahan of Claremore and Hannah Westlund of Owasso will be honored with three first place, one second place and one third place award during the March 13 awards event at the Old Will Rogers Theatre in Oklahoma City. This represents the most first place awards RSU students have brought home during the annual competition.

Powders received first place award in the “Radio Magazine Talk Program” category for his interview with musician David Pujol.  Westlund earned a first place award in the “Radio Personality Aircheck” category.

Gammon and Prock won first place for “Radio Entertainment Short” with a satiric Star Wars-themed episode of their weekly radio entertainment show, “Center Stage.” The pair also scored a third place award for their interview with Skip Hollandsworth, the co-writer for the recently released independent film, “Bernie,” starring Jack Black.

Mahan received second place in the “Radio Magazine Talk Program” category for her interview with guitarist Dean Roland of the band, Collective Soul.

Another RSU communications student, Paige DeLozier of Collinsville, was recently notified that she is one of six students around the state who will receive a $2,000 education foundation scholarship from the OAB.  DeLozier and the other scholarship winners from the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, Cameron University and University of Central Oklahoma will be recognized during the March 13 ceremony. This is the fifth time in the past eight years that an RSU student has earned one of the competitive OAB scholarships.

Cathy Coomer, RSU Assistant Professor of Communications and General Manager of KRSC-FM, will also be honored for her 2012-13 tenure as OBEA’s President.
