Pryor Times

Thunderbird Youth Academy is now accepting applications for it’s 41st class. The nationally recognized school is offered through the National Guard and the Oklahoma Military Department. The Academy is offering a free 17 month program for all students’ ages 16-18 that are seeking to complete a GED or earn high school credits.

The accredited program consists of a 22 week residential phase in Pryor, OK, and a 12 month community-based post residential phase. While in Pryor the cadets will learn self-discipline and community spirit using a variety of methods built around the program’s eight core objectives. Included are academic excellence, job skills, leadership training and physical fitness.

Cadets will also have the opportunity while attending to enroll in college courses at OSU Institute of Technology, Rogers State, and Northeastern University.

Once the residential phase is complete, cadets of will work with case managers and local mentors to continue the transition back into their local communities across Oklahoma. This important step ensures that life and career goals stay on track. This mentorship program is what sets apart Thunderbird from other alternative education environments.

Longtime state senator and retired Brig. Gen. Gerald “Ged” Wright believes Thunderbird Youth Academy is a hidden treasure for the state of Oklahoma where students voluntarily come to Thunderbird looking for a new start.

Wright, who also serves as the President of the supporting Thunderbird Youth Academy Foundation says “The alternatives for at-risk youth who don’t attend programs like Thunderbird are increased unemployment, substance abuse, and teen pregnancy. This program has saved taxpayers millions in correctional costs and increased the states revenue base by millions as these young adults enter the workforce.”

New students will be accepted through July 7th  with tours of the campus provided every Thursday at 10:00AM. Applications can be submitted online at or by calling 877-295-0932. Enrollment is open to both to men and women ages 16-18.

Thunderbird Youth Academy, located in Pryor, OK is operated by the Oklahoma Military Department. The site has housed a private orphanage, state home and military barracks. The Thunderbird Youth Academy was launched in September of 1993 under the National Guard Bureau.
