Area elementary students will see and actually handle the typical contents of a Continental soldier’s trunk next week, according to Union Mission Chapter DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) member Neva Kegley. The students will also watch a DVD provided by the Oklahoma History Center (OHC).
“They’ll see George Washington take command of British forces
during the French and Indian War, and later leading the Army
across the icy Delaware River,” Kegley said. “Charming scenes show Washington’s first encounter with the widow Martha Curtis and his return home to Mount Vernon after resigning his military commission at the end of the war.”
“The Continental Soldier Trunk is a hands-on history program providing objects representing the day to day life of a soldier during the American Revolution. These reproduction items will bring life as a Continental soldier to life for students and groups of all ages. By utilizing these items, students will gain firsthand knowledge of what soldiers used and carried with them in our war for independence.”
“The trunk also has some booklets with information and primary sources – again with a lot of focus on George Washington,” said a spokesperson for the OHC. “A common activity teachers do with kids is set up stations with the different items. The students circulate among the room in small groups to describe the item, guess what it was used for, who would have used it, etc. This gets them to think critically and to write descriptions instead of the teacher having to lecture. Then they discuss what it is as a class. I believe some teachers/students have dressed up in the clothing too.”
Kegley plans to pick up the presentation materials in Oklahoma City March 25 for presentation to two schools in Pryor March 26 and to Adair March 27. Other schools have been contacted but have not yet scheduled a presentation.
