Music returns to Chouteau

PRYOR, OK — There’s singing in the hallways once again. For the first time in years, Chouetau Public Schools welcomes back music classes.

“We were able to hire two music teachers this year, one for kindergarten through second grade and one for third through 12th grade,” said Chouteau Elementary School Principal Donna Pillars. “We made it a priority and worked it out in the budget.”

Teona Looney will join the Chouteau Elementary staff as their new music teacher. Looney is a first year teacher who moved with her son from New Orleans to Chouteau last year.

“I am so excited to be a certified music teacher after all this time,” said Looney, who spent time as a stay at home active duty military wife and mom before becoming a single mom.

She is teaching elemengary general music with third through fifth grade as well as first grade.

“The curriculm my elementary general music classes follows state PASS standards as well as National Music Educators national standards. We are learning how to read and play music on rhythmic instruments in class. This year, we are focusing on learning about music in our American culture ranging from early rock and roll, jazz, country, pop, R & B, and patriotic music,” said Looney.

Looney is taking her love of music education to the older students as well.

“I am also directing the middle and high school Chouteau Wildcat Choir Style group this year. We have 22 young ladies from grades 6-12. We had our first fundraiser  Saturday, Sept. 21, at Black Buggy Days. We will be hosting a Bake Sale at the event. The following Saturday, Sept. 28, we will be hosting a car wash at Mr. Woods auto lot in Chouteau. We are raising funds for choir music and uniform shirts and pants for concert attire. We help to be ready to attend and sing in a choral competition in the spring,” said Looney.

Looney said she also has a Christmas and spring choir concert the dates of which are to be determined.
