Rep. Chuck Hoskin
How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes! ~Maya Angelou
We had a quiet week in the legislature last week after an action-packed deadline week. A highlight, however, was honoring our country’s veterans on Wednesday during Veterans Awareness Day.
In a joint session of the House and Senate, we recognized Oklahomans who have served their country and paid special tribute to 94 year-old Mabel Ruth “Mike” Stephanic, who served as a nurse and an Army 2nd Lt. during World War II.
It was a pleasure to have her with us that day during what is one of the many privileges of being a public servant – honoring Oklahoma’s many wonderful citizens.
In the coming weeks, we will begin taking up legislation from the Senate as committee work begins again. A few Senate bills that made it through committees last week and appear on the floor agenda for Monday include:
SB 1036 which establishes a separate sentencing proceeding for those convicted of murder in the first degree when the state is not seeking the death penalty.
SB 301 which creates the State Council for Juvenile Supervision.
SB 521 which directs DHS to develop and implement a workforce improvement program
SB 549 would add crimes relating to exploitation of the elderly and disabled, insurance and worker’s compensation fraud to the list of crimes considered to be racketeering.
SB 929 which authorizes the disclosure of records from the Office of Juvenile Affairs to a child turning 18.
SB 76 which drastically increases filing fees to run for elective office.
SB 640 which deals with sliding scales for Medicaid premium assistance.
SB 156 which requires the State Regents to submit reports outlining costs associated with different courses, degrees, and the marketability of degree programs upon graduation.
SB 79 which modifies composition of certain rural fire protection coordination districts.
SB 641 would create Master Conservancy districts and the formation and alteration of districts for drought purposes.
SB 838 which modifies the fair board election procedure.
SB 965 which modifies the appointments to the Oklahoma Water Resources Board based on regional representation
