PRYOR, OK —
October is National Farm to School Month and National School Lunch Week (Oct. 14 to 18) and National Food Day (Oct. 24). In celebration of these designations, Mayes County Schools and citizens are involved in numerous events and workshops.
Oct. 8 and 9, Chouteau Schools are hosting at least one representative from every K-8 school building in the county for a 'Growing Classroom' workshop. (flier attached). This nationally recognized curriculum connects classroom learning with gardening.
Oct. 14 and 22, the Pryor Creek Rec Center is hosting a workshop entitled 'Preserve and Serve the Harvest' from 6:30 p.m. 8 p.m. Same workshop on two available nights. participants can learn about canning, drying, healthy substitutions to family recipes and how to cook with the seasons.
On Oct. 21 Pryor elementary schools will be having a 'Know your Farmer, Know your Food' tasting event during lunch periods 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Special treats featuring local ingredients will be served, local producers will be highlighted and students will learn about healthy eating. Other school districts have planned events.
Pryor Schools, Locust Grove and Chouteau are participating in Farm to School after exciting workshops for all cafeteria staff held at each school district in August before the start of the school year. Workshops were sponsored by the Oklanoma Department of Agriculture and Cherokee Nation
/Healthy Nation in partnership with Mayes County HOPE and the Oklanoma Farm and Food Alliance.
