Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences will host Stephen Klaine, Ph.D., on Oct. 17 and 18. Dr. Klaine is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Institute of Environmental Toxicology at Clemson University.
Klaine will present the 13th Sitlington Lecture in Toxicology on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. in McElroy Hall Auditorium at the veterinary center located on the west end of the OSU Stillwater campus. His talk, “The Janus Face of Nanotechnology: Promises, Products, and Potential Problems,” is open to the public at no charge.
“Dr. Klaine has more than 25 years experience conducting environmental research and educating graduate students,” says Carey Pope, Ph.D., OSU Regents Professor, Sitlington Chair in Toxicology, Department of Physiological Sciences at the veterinary center and host of the lecture. “His research ranges from the bioavailability and toxicity of pesticides and metals to pesticide risk assessment to the environmental behavior and toxicity of nanomaterials.”
Klaine has served on the board of directors of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and has been an associate editor for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry for 15 years. Since 2009, he has been on the editorial board of Nanotoxicology. From 1995 to 2000, he was the only U.S. participant on a multinational International Atomic Energy Agency Cooperative Research Program on Pesticides in Coastal Tropical Ecosystems. Klaine has also served on the NRC panel to review the National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategy on Environmental and Human Safety Needs for Nanomaterials.
“Well known in his field, Dr. Klaine has been a Sigma Xi National Lecturer, the Clemson University Sigma Xi researcher of the year in 2007 and recipient of the Clemson University Alumni Award for Outstanding Research in 2009. We are excited to have him share his expertise with OSU scientists, researchers, faculty and students,” adds Pope.
During his two-day visit, Klaine will meet with faculty members of the newly formed Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program involving participants from the veterinary center, Departments of Zoology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, and the Center for Health Sciences. He will also present a special seminar on the “Influence of Antidepressants on Fish Brain Chemistry and Behavior.”
