Beekeeping classes

PRYOR, OK — Beekeeping classes have been scheduled. Tahlequah Eats – the Cherokee County Food Policy Council - is sponsoring beekeeping classes this spring. The classes will be held from

1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays - Jan. 25, Feb. 8, March 1, March 22, April 12 (with a rain date in April). Location is still to be announced, but hopefully will be at  rural community centers to hold sessions near active bee hives. The cost for the course is $75 for the first person in a family, with $25 for a second family member (ages 10-15 can attend free with family). Participants must purchase the Beekeepers Handbook ($25 with shipping). The instructors will be George McLaughlin with the assistance of Coleen Thornton, both local experts with localized plant, bee and weather knowledge. A curriculum that was developed by John Talbert from the North Texas Beekeepers Association will be use and discussion of pollinator foods - trees and plants that bees love, safe herbicides along with the art of beekeeping. A minimum of eight people must be signed up and paid by Jan. 18 to make this year’s classes an option.
