The Mayes County fair board held its regular meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16 at the OSU Extension center.
The main items discussed were rule changes for the upcoming 2014 Mayes County Fair. The board voted to change the check-in time on Thursday to 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. In the past it had been 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
This year, exhibitors showing broilers will be receiving all pullets. In the past, exhibitors received straight-run chickens, roosters and pullets.
This year’s horse shows will begin at 7 p.m. both nights instead of 6 p.m.
Beef exhibitors must own the dam and be listed on the registration papers as owner to participate in the Bred and Owned beef show. No commercial heifers will be allowed because there is no way to prove ownership
At the next meeting, tentatively Feb. 20, the board will vote on the possibility of having a junior rabbit show on Thursday morning, on a trial basis. This idea was brought to the board by an Ag teacher who said 70 percent of his chapter’s Supervised Agriculture Experience projects are rabbits or poultry. The board was provided with a list of rules and guidelines for this event.
The board is considering the idea that every exhibitor would wear the same T-shirt when showing, which would be provided to them. Advertising space would be sold to be on the back of the shirts which would cover the cost.
Other items which will be discussed at the next meeting include the 2014 Farm Family and the 2014 fair book dedication along with each superintendent having the right to decide when they have showmanship, before or after the show.
